Office work almost never runs short of processing power. What actually slows a desk down is memory, drive speed and a machine that will not wake from sleep. Get those three right and there is budget left for the screen, the chair and the warranty. Most offices start with FOCUS MINI or FOCUS LITE — and we will tell you when that is enough.

Most offices need less machine than they expect, and we will say so. A standard desk running Microsoft 365, a browser and a call is well covered by the smaller builds, and the difference is felt in memory rather than in the processor. The exceptions are worth naming: large financial models, analysts who also run design or data tools, and anyone presenting from their own machine. Those are the desks worth spending on.
In the order that matters for office work — which is not the order a spec sheet puts them in.
Memory is the usual ceiling for office work. A browser left open all day, Teams, Outlook and a workbook resident together are a memory load, not a compute load. When memory runs short, Windows pages to disk and everything waits. The tier above base suits anyone who keeps all four open at once.
NVMe, rather than a hard disk or a budget SATA drive. Cold boot, the first Outlook open, pulling a large workbook off a network share and searching a full mailbox are the four operations behind most judgements of whether a machine is quick or slow.
Core count is oversold for office work. What counts is single-thread speed, because Excel's calculation engine, Power Query and most line-of-business apps still push one thread hard. For this work, a few fast cores beat many slower ones.
Integrated graphics run email, spreadsheets, browsers and calls without difficulty. A card is worth adding for two reasons only: driving three or more monitors cleanly, and moving video call encode and background blur off the processor for people who are on camera all day.
A machine that sits on a desk is judged on noise before speed. Proper airflow and a fan curve set for light sustained load, rather than for gaming, keep it inaudible through the day in a shared office.

Email, a browser, Word, Outlook and a video call place little load on a current processor, and have not for years. When an office PC is described as slow, the cause is nearly always one of three things: it has run out of memory and is swapping to disk, it is booting from a low-cost drive fitted five years ago, or it fails to wake from sleep properly and adds a ninety-second wait before the first task of the day.
None of that is fixed by adding cores. It is fixed by memory headroom, an NVMe boot drive, and a machine set up properly the first time. Those three account for most of what a good office build is, and they are why the entry model on this page is the right machine for the large majority of roles in most businesses.

In practice the order is fairly consistent. Memory comes first, and it is no longer the cheap line item it was a couple of years ago, which makes getting the capacity right at purchase more important, not less. A working day means forty or fifty browser tabs, Outlook, Teams, a few PDFs and at least one Excel workbook, all resident from nine until five. Memory is what keeps that workload responsive through the afternoon.
Storage second, and specifically NVMe. Cold boot, opening a large workbook off a network share, and the first mailbox search of the day are the three moments on which a computer is judged. Cores come a distant third.
The rest of the budget often belongs outside the machine entirely. A second monitor changes more working days than a faster processor, and so do a properly supportive chair and warranty cover that returns a machine to service the same week rather than the same month. If the budget is fixed, that is where the difference belongs.
Memory — no longer cheap, which makes sizing it correctly at purchase more important. It is the change people notice within a day.
