THE FOUR PLATFORMS

Each platform is a configured starting point. The specifications below describe what the platform accommodates; the configuration supplied to you is determined during consultation.

These are platforms, not fixed configurations. Every one is built to order in Australia around the work it will actually do. Before we agree a build we ask three things: what software you run, how large your files or datasets are, and where the machine has to live. Those three answers shape the specification more than any benchmark result.

One conversation usually covers all of it — performance with the people using the machines, imaging and deployment with your IT team, quoting and terms with procurement.

We specify to the requirement. If a single-GPU workstation does the job, that is what we will recommend. We will not quote you a bigger machine than the work needs.

Built for workloads that need more GPU power, with flexible configurations for rendering, simulation, AI and other GPU-accelerated applications.
Add a second card and a render that splits across GPUs finishes in roughly half the time. One card can drive your screens while the other runs flat out, so the machine stays usable while it works. Power delivery and airflow are specified for both cards running all day — not for a benchmark.

  • Render queues that scale across cards. GPU path-traced rendering divides almost linearly, so queue length is generally addressed by adding a card rather than by specifying a faster one.

  • Fine-tuning and local inference at a scale that exceeds a single card but does not warrant rack-mounted hardware.

  • Workloads that must continue during a render, with the display and the compute load carried by separate cards.

Up to four GPUs in a single chassis on a Threadripper-class platform, with sufficient PCIe lanes to supply every card at full bandwidth and the power and cooling to sustain them overnight. Where utilisation is high, ownership removes per-hour costs from the workflow and allows restricted data to remain on local hardware.

  • Training and rendering conducted on most working days. At that level of utilisation, ownership is generally more economical than hourly rental.

  • Models, scenes or datasets requiring the combined memory of four cards rather than the throughput of one.

The platforms above in a standard 4U rackmount chassis. Thermal output and noise are relocated to the machine room and the operator's workspace remains quiet. The operational case is front-serviceable systems in a cabinet rather than towers at desks, remote management, and identical units racked alongside one another as capacity increases.

Central network storage sized to the team, covering capacity, drive redundancy, network throughput and a backup schedule configured before the unit is dispatched. Mesa is deployed alongside the workstations it serves, so the installation is commissioned as a single working system rather than as components for your IT team to integrate.

Provide the software in use, the size of the datasets and the intended installation environment. We will respond with a proposed configuration and a quotation. Where a single-GPU workstation meets the requirement, we will recommend that instead.

MULTI-GPU ENGINEERING

The technical reasoning applied when these systems are specified. It holds regardless of where the hardware is purchased.

WHAT SCALES ACROSS CARDS,ANDWHAT DOESNOT

GPU path-traced rendering and data-parallel training divide almost linearly: two cards approach twice the throughput and four approach four times. Editing, CAD viewports and single-scene interactivity do not; they are served by one GPU together with the processor, and a second card contributes nothing. Establishing which of these accounts for the majority of the workload is the first step, as it determines whether a multi-GPU configuration is warranted.

VIDEO MEMORY IS A LIMIT, NOT A RATE

A model, scene or dataset either fits within a card's memory or it does not. Where it does not, the task fails or reverts to system memory at substantially reduced speed. Two cards double throughput but do not pool memory for most workloads: a scene requiring 20GB requires it on each card. For this reason we establish model and scene sizes before core counts, and a card with greater memory frequently outperforms a faster card with less.

SUPPLYING FOUR CARDS IS A PLATFORM DECISION

Four GPUs at full bandwidth require more PCIe lanes than any desktop processor provides, which is why HYPERFOCUS is built on a Threadripper-class platform where the lane count maintains every card at full width and leaves capacity for fast storage. On a desktop board a four-card configuration is bandwidth-constrained; the platform is generally the more consequential specification decision.

CONSUMER AND WORKSTATION GRAPHICS

GeForce-class cards provide the greatest throughput per dollar and are suitable for most render and training work. Workstation-class cards justify their cost in three circumstances: certified drivers for CAD and simulation suites, greater memory per card, and cooling designed for cards installed in close proximity under sustained duty. We specify according to workload rather than tier, and a substantial proportion of our multi-GPU systems are supplied with consumer cards.

VALIDATED UNDER SUSTAINED LOAD

Multi-GPU systems undergo extended stress testing with every card under load prior to dispatch. A system specified for overnight operation must be validated at sustained temperature rather than over a short benchmark, as the thermal behaviour of four closely spaced cards is not predictable from component specifications. Any system that throttles or faults during testing is withheld and corrected before it is dispatched.
