Repairing Windows
Complexity: Intermediate | Time: 10 min | Tools: A USB drive with at least 8GB of storage (note: this will erase all data on the USB)., A stable internet connection., Access to a Windows PC to create the USB.
If Windows is experiencing issues and not running properly, we may be able to repair it without the need for a fresh installation.
Steps to Repair Windows
Preparing the USB
• Follow the Media Creation Tool guide to prepare the USB for the next steps
In the BIOS
Asus/ROG Motherboards
• In the BIOS head over to "Advanced Mode". If not there automatically, press "F7" to get into it
• Scroll across the top to the "Boot" menu. Scroll down to "Boot Overide" and select your Windows Boot USB from that list.
• The USB will usually be listed as UEFI, then the USB brand, Partition 1. Once selected, you'll boot into the Windows install setup.
Gigabyte/AORUS Motherboards
• In the BIOS head over to "Advanced Mode". If not there automatically, press "F2" to get into it.
• Scroll across the top to the "Save and Exit" menu. Scroll down to "Boot Overide" and select your Windows Boot USB from that list.
• The USB will usually be listed as UEFI, then the USB brand, Partition 1. Once selected, you'll boot into the Windows install setup.
MSI Motherboards
• In the BIOS head over to "Advanced Mode". If not there automatically, press "F7" to get into it.
• Select the "Settings" option, scroll down and select "Save and Exit", and scroll down to "Boot Overide" and select your Windows Boot USB from that list.
• The USB will usually be listed as UEFI, then the USB brand, Partition 1. Once selected, you'll boot into the Windows install setup.
ASRock Motherboards
• In the BIOS head over to "Advanced Mode". If not there automatically, press "F6" to get into it
• Scroll across the top to the "Boot" menu. Scroll down to "Boot Option Priorities or Boot option #1" and select your Windows Boot USB from that list.
• The USB will usually be listed as UEFI, then the USB brand, Partition 1. Once selected, you'll boot into the Windows install setup. If not, Save and Exit to boot to the Windows Install setup.
Windows Installer
• Press any key to continue once the PC has booted off the USB.Â
• Leave the first page of settings as is. Click 'Next' and then select 'Repair your computer'.
• Go to "Choose an option screen", and click the "Troubleshoot" option. Then, go to the Advanced options windows.
• Choose "Startup Repair". After doing so, Windows Startup Repair will start diagnosing your PC.
