Why Should I Reseat My CPU?

Reseating the CPU can help address several issues:

  • Boot Issues: Your PC might fail to boot if the CPU isn't properly seated.
  • No Power: Your PC may not power on at all.

Reseating the CPU could help resolve these issues.

Steps to Reseat the CPU

Reseating your CPU involves handling delicate components. If done incorrectly, it will void your warranty or cause damage to your system. Proceed with caution and at your own risk. If you are unsure or uncomfortable performing these steps, please seek professional assistance.

Prepare the PC

  • Turn off your computer and unplug all cables, including the power cable.
  • Wear an anti-static wrist strap or regularly touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity.
  • Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to release any residual power.
  • Using the Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screws from the side panel of your case and set the panel aside.
  • Find the CPU cooler, which is usually a large fan or heat sink on the motherboard.

Remove the Cooler and CPU

  • Unplug the fan cable from the motherboard.
  • Loosen the screws or clips holding the cooler in place.
  • Carefully lift the cooler off the CPU. If it’s stuck, gently twist it to break the thermal paste seal.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or paper towel with isopropyl alcohol to remove the old thermal paste from both the CPU and the cooler.
  • Check both the CPU and the cooler for any visible damage such as burn marks, corrosion, or deep scratches. If you see any, contact support as you might need to replace the hardware.

Ryzen (AMD) CPUs (AM4 Sockets)

Re-seat the CPU

  • Lift the lever next to the CPU socket to release the CPU.
  • Gently lift the CPU straight up and out of the socket.
  • Inspect the CPU pins. If any are bent, carefully straighten them with a small tool like a mechanical pencil.
  • Align the triangle on the CPU with the triangle on the socket. Gently place the CPU back into the socket and lower the lever to secure it.
  • CAUTION: It is very easy to snap the pins, so don't use too much force or leverage.

Ryzen (AMD) CPUs (AM5 Sockets)

Release the CPU Retention Mechanism

  • The AM5 socket has a different retention mechanism compared to AM4. Consult your motherboard manual for specific instructions.
  • Carefully lift the CPU straight up and out of the socket.
  • AM5 CPUs have contact pads instead of pins, so check the socket itself for any damage.
  • Align the notches on the CPU with the socket. Place the CPU back into the socket and re-secure the retention mechanism.

Reinstalling the CPU Cooler

  • Place a small, pea-sized amount of thermal paste in the center of the CPU.
  • Carefully place the cooler back onto the CPU. Screw it back in place, alternating between screws to ensure even pressure.
  • Plug the fan cable back into the motherboard.
